More and more, conventional medical doctors and therapists are discovering what preventive medicine doctors have already known for quite some time—antidepressants aren’t always the best answer for treating depression, and in some cases, they don’t even work at all. Especially when depression is being caused by a hormonal imbalance. Many women begin to experience symptoms of depression as they go through the major hormonal changes surrounding menopause, even if they’ve never experienced depression before. Many of these women don’t use typical terms to describe their feelings. Instead they report feeling outside of their bodies or strong physical sensations rather than feelings. This is because not all depression is the same, and it shouldn’t be treated the same. Women are particularly susceptible to depression that is caused by hormonal fluctuations. For many women, symptoms are especially strong during menopause, when sex hormone levels drop dramatically, during their monthly menstrual cycle, or even during pregnancy or postpartum.
