Diabetes is a growing health concern across the world, with 422 million sufferers recorded globally in 2014. Diabetes can cause a variety of other serious conditions and consequences, such as amputation, heart failure, and blindness. Insulin transports the glucose, or sugar, from the food you eat into your cells to be converted or used as energy. When this hormonal function is not carried out by the body properly, type 2 diabetes can ensue. Most often, we hear that type 2 diabetes is predominantly caused by poor diet. While this is a major factor, it isn’t the only one that can lead to this disease. Insulin is a hormone, and when there is insulin resistance, an imbalance, this can cause an imbalance among other hormones in the body, including cortisol, thyroid hormones, and growth hormone, as well.
